What is Matariki?

June 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm | Posted in Matariki, New Zealand | Leave a comment

Matariki is the name given by Maori to the Pleiades star cluster, which rises once a year low in the north-eastern horizon, just before dawn, around the end of May.

Maori New Year usually begins around the time of the first full moon after Matariki first becomes visible.

This year it’s June 6th.

The Warrington Children’s Book Club met on Tuesday afternoon at Warrington School.

Books we talked about were:

We made paper bag lanterns from a beautiful book called ‘Magic Lanterns’ to celebrate Matariki.

And we heard a couple of short stories from ‘Snake and Lizard’ by Joy Cowley which won Book of the Year in the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards.

And we had afternoon tea too!

Check out our website page for more info and some great booklists!
