What is Matariki?

June 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm | Posted in Matariki, New Zealand | Leave a comment

Matariki is the name given by Maori to the Pleiades star cluster, which rises once a year low in the north-eastern horizon, just before dawn, around the end of May.

Maori New Year usually begins around the time of the first full moon after Matariki first becomes visible.

This year it’s June 6th.
