Water for elephants – Sara Gruen

Ever wanted to run away and join the circus? Then Water for elephants is the book for you! The story opens with the main character Jacob Jankowski, a 90-year-old man, living a bored and frustrated life in an American nursing home.

His mind frequently wanders back to the depression years, a time in his youth when he travelled with ‘The Benzuni brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth’

Sara Gruen paints a vivid picture of circus life in the depression years, the excitement and wonder, but also the harsh brutality as everyone – man and woman and beast – fights for survival in very harsh conditions.

This is a beautifully written novel, full of interesting characters (including Rosie the elephant), a fascinating setting and a rattling good plot.
