This fascinating BBC series ‘Egypt – rediscovering a lost world’ tells the stories of three of the leading figures associated with the study of ancient Egypt. Follow Howard Carter’s long search for the Tomb of Tutankhamun, Jean-Francois Champollions race to decipher the Rosetta Stone and unlock the secrets of the ancient hieroglyphs. Wonder at the incredible journeys of eccentric Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni, the failed circus strongman who uncovered Ramesses’s the II’s great temple at Abu Simbel in Nubia. With typical BBC flair the lavish cinematography brings to life Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs while the stories highlight the attitudes these men worked against in a time when the worlds antiquities were being plundered and sold to wealthy collectors.
