“The Bird Woman” by Kerry Hardie

I disovered this book a few months ago, but it is one of those rare beauties that stay with you long after you’ve reached its end. Set in Ireland with eye-opening religious and political undertones, Ellen McKinnon narrates us through her life as she struggles to accept what she cannot change, to love what she has long believed she’s hated and finally, to simply let go. Hardie uses her poetic vision to transform her characters into flesh and blood; a multilayered observation of what it really means to be human. Magical, real and so, so good…this is a fascinating book for any serious reader.
