International Earth Day

March 20, 2007 at 10:29 am | In Library Publications, Library_News, The Word | No Comments

The United Nations celebrates International Earth Day each year on the Northern vernal equinox. This year Earth Day falls on March 20th and will mark the 37th year of observance. The first Earth Day was celebrated on March 1st, 1970, in San
Francisco.

The Earth Day flag used today is a beautiful photographic image of the fully lit Earth, commonly known as the “Blue Marble”, and is now one
of the most widely published photographs in existence.

Partner in Lifelong Learning

March 13, 2007 at 11:36 am | In Library Publications, The Word | No Comments

Within just one or two degrees of separation, most people will
know someone with children currently at school or recently
graduated to tertiary studies, the workforce or life experience.

With the start of the new school and academic year upon
us, it is timely to reflect on the role of the public library as a
partner in the lifelong learning journey of each member of our
community.

In recognition of this important partnership, the Dunedin City
Council has recently adopted a new Library Learning Support
Policy to strengthen the links between your public library and the
139 schools and preschools across the city.

Brainy kids need broadband

March 6, 2007 at 9:48 am | In Library Publications, The Word | No Comments

That’s the message that Telecom wants parents to take on board. And, of course, quick access to the Internet is an asset to any household and its members. Educationally, though, what are kids’ real information needs?

Information needs to be accurate and as far as possible it needs to be impartial: if it’s put out by some interest group who want to sell us something or influence our political or religious opinions, it may still be of some use to us, but only if we know who they are and what their agenda is.

Children’s Choice is a newsletter created by DPL librarians to promote
the quality new children’s books that have recently been added to
our collections.

Each edition lets parents and kids see the wide range of new books
in both fiction and non-fiction. Children’s Choice also includes interesting news items from the Children’s Section and the realm of children’s publishing. The February issue includes the list of finalists in the 2007 Post Book Awards.

This fabulous wealth of new titles is available as a fun
newsletter from all the libraries, including the bookbus, or can be
downloaded in full colour as a pdf from the Kids’ Page.
