Raising a Smile Exhibition
February 14, 2007 at 9:38 am | In Exhibition, Heritage, Reed Gallery |The Lighter Side of The Heritage Collections 14 February – 8 April 2007
The Reed Gallery delights in presenting a cheerful offering of works, suitable for all ages, from the Heritage Collections. This show features humorous writing and illustration, prose and poetry, from the nineteenth century to the present. Each display case suggests different themes including animal wit and wisdom, questionable New Zealand political history and the battle of the sexes. We will let the viewer find yet more amusing connections!
Pop up to the Reed Gallery and be diverted by a series of comic illustrations from rare early editions of Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers and quirky memorabilia with a Pickwick theme. A treasured autographed letter by word-inventor and illustrator Edward Lear makes an appearance, along with some of Lear’s nonsense for children.
Before you view, a word of caution – some of the contents are complete nonsense! We hope to show that no matter how the world is treating you, you’ll find your smile at the library!
